It’s time to burn off some calories!
One of my favorite exercises now is rock climbing. There are a few rock climbing gyms in NYC. The one I go to is The Cliffs at Long Island City.
I’m still a newbie to this hot workout trend but now I’m obsessed with it. Not only do you need strength, but you also need to plan ahead how you want to climb – the step you want to put your hands and feet. To me, it is the challenge you compete against yourself. There are levels. If you reach the top, you get to level up.
I get to learn to know and trust my body. On my first time, I didn’t trust my feet as much. Like many other people when they first start – according to my friend who has been doing it for years – we tend to use arm muscles to pull the body up when we should use our legs to push the body up. After a while when I learn to trust that I can hold my body with my feet and legs, it’s much easier.
I think this sport involves mentality quite a lot. If you believe that you can, you can. You also need to learn to trust your partner who belays you. It’s about learning to work together and to trust each other.
It is an activity that takes time. I usually spend half a day at the center with a few friends. I climb, take turn with friends, rest when I ‘m tired, watch other people climb. By watching others, especially the skillful ones, I learn a lot too. Skillful climbers are like Spiderman. Their posture and movement are very smooth and beautiful.
Call me weird but I love the colors of the wall and the rocks. If the levels are the same, I always go with the one that has nicer colors. On the past Sunday while I was resting my hands, I couldn’t help grabbing my sketchbook and did a quick sketch of the colorful wall, as featured above.
So I have burned some calories, now I have more excuse to eat more!!!
